Farmers Markets in Greater Middletown, CT
By Erik Hernal, founder & editor
Greater Middletown has three farmers markets, all on Fridays: the Middletown Farmers Market (South Green at Union Park, Middletown, 10am to 2pm), the Town of Cromwell Farmers Market (Riverport Park, 1 River Road, Cromwell, 4 to 7pm), and the Higganum Farmers Market (Higganum Green, Haddam, 3:30 to 7pm). Here's the local secret: because they're all on Friday, you can do one for lunch and another for dinner the same day. All three are in season now and checked this week.

The Middletown Farmers Market
The Middletown Farmers Market sets up on the South Green at Union Park (where Pleasant Street meets Main Street) on Fridays from 10am to 2pm. It's the straightforward daytime market: fresh seasonal Connecticut produce and fruit, baked goods, prepared food, crafts, and usually some live music, right in the middle of downtown. Go on your lunch break, grab fresh veggies for the weekend, and you're done. You'll figure out your favorite vendors fast, and parking is easy around the green.
The Town of Cromwell Farmers Market
The Town of Cromwell Farmers Market is the social one. It runs Friday evenings from 4 to 7pm at Riverport Park (1 River Road, Cromwell) from June 5 through September 4, 2026, and it leans more "Friday night out" than "grocery run." Expect food trucks, a rotating set of local farmers, food producers, and artisans, and live music down by the water. Bring the kids, bring a folding chair, and make dinner of it. It's become a real community gathering, run now by the town's Recreation Department after it replaced the older Cromwell market.
Just south: the Higganum Farmers Market
If you're down toward Haddam, the Higganum Farmers Market runs the longest season of the three, Fridays from 3:30 to 7pm, May 22 through October 30, 2026, on Higganum Green where Routes 154 and 81 meet. It's a true village-green market: fresh Connecticut-grown produce from local New England farms, eggs, meat, honey, baked goods, cut flowers, and artisan food, with organic growers in the mix. There's also a midweek market at the Brainerd Memorial Library on Wednesdays in summer if Friday doesn't work.
How to do a farmers-market Friday
Because all three land on Fridays, you can string them together. Hit the Middletown market at lunchtime for produce and a downtown walk, then roll into the Cromwell market or the Higganum market in the evening for food trucks, music, and dinner by the water. The markets run rain or shine in most weather, so it's the cheapest, most local way to spend a summer Friday in Greater Middletown.
