This Month in Greater Middletown: July 2026

By Erik Hernal, founder & editor

The July picks in Middletown, Cromwell, Portland and Middlefield: a free outdoor showing of Cars at Lyman Orchards (July 10), the Robin State Zine Fest and a proper chicken BBQ in Westfield (both July 11), a Summer Vintage Market on Main Street (July 12), and the Olin lunchtime mini-concerts running Tuesdays and Thursdays all month. There were 52 events on our live calendar when we wrote this; these are the ones we'd actually put on the fridge.

The one to plan around: movie night in the orchard

Friday, July 10 at Lyman Orchards stacks up nicely: the Friday Night Live Music series with Chris Cavaliere starts at 6 at 1741 Pub & Grill, and at 8:30 the free outdoor movie night rolls Cars next door at 32 Reeds Gap Road. Bring chairs, feed everyone at the pub first, and the whole evening costs you the popcorn. Lyman is quietly the busiest venue in the area this month; the Goat Cuddle Brigade on the 5th and the Mamma Mia! DJ brunch under the tent on the 12th are both theirs too.

The Saturday doubleheader: zines, then chicken

July 11 splits the day well. The Robin State Zine Fest runs from 11, small-press and handmade stuff you won't see twice. Then at 4, the Westfield Chicken BBQ at 94 Miner Street, the kind of church-hall-and-folding-tables event this area does better than anywhere. No tasting menu in town beats BBQ chicken eaten off a paper plate in a parking lot. Go hungry.

The standing dates worth keeping

The Olin Summer Mini-Concerts run Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12:15 through July: Alex Waterman and Neely Bruce on the 7th, Noah Baerman and Kate Ten Eyck on the 9th, Jullie Pan on the 14th, and Rani Arbo's group on the 16th. Twenty-five free minutes of live music in the middle of a workday. The Tuesday-night Summer Film Series keeps going too, with Flow on July 7 and Lifeboat on July 14. And on the 12th, the Summer Vintage Market sets up at 725 Main Street, right in the middle of everything.
